Benefits
Hello Locals!
This November & December, the Susquehanna Sustainable Business Network (ssbn) will kick off the holiday Think Local First Campaign Nov 27th through December 18th to encourage residents of all ages to explore the businesses and restaurants of York & Lancaster. During this time, the new 2010 Green Pages will be distributed to help shoppers identify locally owned businesses supporting sustainable practices.
ssbn is a non-profit organization working to support a local living economy by educating York & Lancaster County residents of all ages about the personal benefits of choosing local. Research estimates show that for every $100 spent, locally owned businesses return $45+ to the local economy as compared to the $13-$14 from national chain stores operating in the same community. Local business owners have deeper roots in their communities and are less likely to leave. Locally owned businesses have greater control over minimizing their environmental impact, and directly contribute to maintaining the unique character of York & Lancaster County. And, small businesses are the largest growing employers in the United States.
As part of this campaign, we introduce to you the Local Lumpkin. The Local Lumpkin was created by Lancaster designer Sarah Ulrich to rekindle a family memory. Today, the Local Lumpkin becomes a part of our Think Local First Campaign, as our mascot, to rekindle the joy of living in our local communities and supporting our local businesses.
What you can expect as a business participant in this campaign:
- ThinkLocalSusquehanna.org has been created to identify and link participating businesses.
- A Think Local Retailer kit is being created for participating businesses. The kit will provide a window decal, a customer-directed postcard with reasons for buying local, suggestions for in-store activities with the Local Lumpkin to support the campaign and more.
- A York & Lancaster City Think Local event will be held during the First Friday, December 4th and/or Saturday December 5th.
- Lancaster residents will learn more about the benefits of local purchasing through extensive publicity.
We are asking you to join us so that we can implement a widely visible campaign for customers to easily identify Lancaster County locally owned businesses. The power of this campaign will come from the numbers of participants.
We would like to thank all the downtown organizations for co-sponsoring this holiday campaign. Supporting Sponsors include the James Street Improvement District & the Downtown Investment District, the Pennsylvania Downtown Center, Venture Lititz, Downtown Ephrata, Inc., Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce, Manheim Downtown Development Group and Main Street Mount Joy.
We look forward to your seeing your application!
Locally yours,
Sam Droke-Dickinson, Administrative Director of ssbn and owner of Aaron’s Books
& Lydia Sadauskas, Executive Director of the ssbn
